Struggling Volkswagen plant to switch from cars to defence equipment for Israel’s Rafael

Volkswagen is preparing to move its Osnabrueck plant away from vehicle production and into defence manufacturing. The first planned project is linked to Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, with at least 1,200 jobs expected to be retained.

German auto major Volkswagen plans to turn its Osnabrueck factory into a site for defence equipment after vehicle production ends there next year, marking a major change for a plant that has spent years building cars.

Volkswagen said the facility will be sold to Tel Aviv-based Aurelius Capital and the German state of Lower Saxony, which is a major shareholder in the carmaker. The first planned project at the site will involve air defence equipment for Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems.
