BJP’s Dilemma: Finding a consensus CM acceptable to Meitei and Kuki to avoid Prez rule

Amid the political crisis in Manipur after CM Biren N Singh resigned, now the Congress has claimed that the proposed session of the Manipur Assembly was cancelled as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could not decide on a new chief minister. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also questioned why Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla was violating Article 174 (1) by not convening a session of the assembly. The seventh session of the 12th Manipur Assembly, which was scheduled to begin on February 10, has been cancelled with immediate effect.

A different kind of challenge has arisen before the BJP after Singh’s resignation as it will have to find a face who can change the course of the game in Manipur as there is a deep divide between the Meitei and the Kuki in the state. As the entire state has been in the grip of violence, the Saffron party is looking for a leader who can restore trust and governance. It may be noted that in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, BJP and its allies have 45 MLAs, of which 37 MLAs belong to the BJP MLAs, of which seven are Kukis.
