US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia: Why Kyiv isn't at the table

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has been a busy man ever since assuming the Oval office in January. While he is ticking off many important boxes, Trump’s role in the two ongoing wars is being touted to be the most important assignments for POTUS at the moment. And Trump is up to the task. He has been talking about the ongoing crisis at Gaza, he has also simultaneously been negotiating with Russia with an aim to get a closure to the ongoing Ukraine conflict. It is a part of his ongoing effort that the US has decided to engage with Russia in Riyadh. Apart from bilateral ties between the two nations who don’t have a rosy past as allies, the talks are bound to veneer towards Ukraine, the conflict therein, and whether US will support the NATO membership of Kyiv.

There have been reports that suggest Trump has already bowed in to Putin’s request of not encouraging the NATO membership of Ukraine, a position that Russia has had since the organisation made their intent of including Ukraine in its ambit clear in 2008. NATO reiterated its stance in 2021 which resulted in Russia also raising its ante against the move. The cat and mice game has been on since then. At present, while Russia and the US seem to have reached a consensus on the non membership for Ukraine, and a host of other critical concern areas, President Zelenskky has also made his annoyance known.
