US forces leave Iraq after 23 years, raising Iran proxy and ISIS concerns

The US has completed its military withdrawal from Iraq, ending a 23-year military presence that began with the 2003 invasion. While Iraq has hailed the move as a step towards full sovereignty, the exit has raised concerns about greater Iranian influence and a possible resurgence of Islamic State.

New Delhi: US forces have completed their withdrawal from Iraq, ending more than two decades of American military presence in the country and raising questions about what comes next for its security.

The pullout, completed on September 30, was agreed upon by Washington and Baghdad in 2024. It marks the end of the US-led coalition’s military mission against the Islamic State (IS), although Iraqi security forces will continue counter-terrorism operations.
