Rare business: Will Trump’s loyalty in the Russia-Ukraine war depend on mineral deal?

New Delhi: Ever since assuming office the second time around, US President re-elect Donald Trump’s revamp of traditional foreign policy has caused uncertainty around the world. Nothing more so for Ukraine and its European allies. From deciding to talk to Putin first after getting re-elected and ignoring Ukraine while going forward for peace talks with Russia, Ukrainian interests seem to be lost to Putin.

While ignoring Ukraine, Trump did mention a rare earth mineral deal, whereby US possession of these valuables might placate him to consider Ukrainian interests more. Ukraine’s President Zelensky initially was reluctant to give Trump any outsized control of his mineral assets, but with Russia now opting to come up with a deal of its own, it seems at least for the movement, the balance of power would reside with the one who could give Trump a better deal for the rare minerals.

When Trump first floated the idea of acquiring rare earth minerals from Ukraine, Zelensky might not have anticipated how serious Trump was for their acquisition. His initial hesitation seems to not have worked out well for him.
