Quebec separatist party wins election, puts Canada PM Carney on national unity test
The Parti Québécois has won Quebec’s provincial election and will return to power after more than a decade. Its leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has promised another referendum on independence, setting up a fresh national-unity challenge for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
New Delhi: Canada’s separatist Parti Québécois (PQ) has won Quebec’s provincial election, returning to power after more than a decade and putting the question of the French-speaking province’s independence back at the centre of Canadian politics.
PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon is set to become Quebec’s premier. The party has promised to hold another referendum on independence from Canada, although St-Pierre Plamondon has said he would wait until US President Donald Trump leaves office in January 2029 before proceeding with such a vote.
The PQ’s victory ends eight years of rule........
