Italy PM Giorgia Meloni seeks EU trademark for her voice amid rising AI deepfake threat

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has applied to trademark her voice with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, seeking an additional legal shield against AI-generated deepfakes and unauthorised voice cloning.

New Delhi: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has applied to register her voice as a trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), in a move aimed at protecting her identity from the growing threat of artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes.

According to Reuters, Meloni’s application, filed on October 5, includes a four-second audio recording in which she repeats the phrase ‘Io sono Giorgia Meloni’, or ‘I am Giorgia Meloni’, in Italian. The application is currently under examination by the EUIPO.
