The recent announcement that the United States will lower tariffs on “Made in India" products to 18 per cent represents far more than a mere adjustment in trade barriers.

It is a strategic breakthrough — a culmination of deft diplomacy, economic assertiveness, and ideological confidence in India’s role as a global manufacturing powerhouse. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed this move as a “trade breakthrough", the significance extends beyond balance sheets into the realm of geopolitical realignment and the vindication of India’s economic policies.

At the heart of this development is a recalibration of the India–US economic relationship. For years, Indian exporters faced punitive tariffs in the US market, with Washington’s reciprocal levies at times ballooning to prohibitive levels. The new 18 per cent tariff regime, a reduction from previously higher rates, provides a decisive competitive edge to Indian goods in what remains one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
