Opinion | India’s Physical AI Moment: Why Robots Could Define The Next Startup Revolution

From software-led innovation to intelligent machines in the real world, India is beginning to build the technological foundations of a new industrial era

For more than two decades, India’s technology story has been overwhelmingly associated with software. The country became the back office of the world, built globally competitive IT services companies, produced millions of engineers and created a formidable digital economy. But the next chapter of India’s technological rise may not be written primarily in code. It may be built in factories, warehouses, defence facilities, hospitals, farms and logistics hubs by machines that can see, reason, learn and act.

The emergence of physical artificial intelligence, or Physical AI, represents precisely this transition. The recent movement among Indian startups to develop AI-powered industrial robots, humanoids and autonomous machines is not merely another technology trend. A recent report highlighting the ambitions of companies such as Ati Robotics, Addverb Technologies and Novus Hi-Tech Robotics offers an early glimpse into this emerging ecosystem. These companies are attempting to combine artificial intelligence with robotics to create machines capable of responding to dynamic environments rather than simply following rigidly programmed instructions. That distinction is fundamental.
