Is injecting illicit fentanyl unsafe? Most people would unhesitatingly say “yes,” but Canada’s new Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Joss Reimer, has refused to clearly answer this question, suggesting she is unfit for the position.

The Carney government appointed Reimer this spring so that she, like her predecessors, might lead the country through a range of public health issues, including the national addiction crisis. While her resume is impressive (she was previously the Chief Medical Officer for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority), Reimer is not an addiction doctor and seemingly treats the field as an afterthought.

Her carefully-curated (and heavily self-promotional) social media channels are filled with slick videos expounding on the virtues of vaccination and dangers of medical misinformation. Yet, illicit drugs are almost never mentioned — perhaps they don’t fit into her influencer branding strategy.
