Google Launches SynthID Detector Worldwide So Anyone Can Check If Photos, Videos And Audio Were Made By AI
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google has opened its artificial intelligence detection tool to the public worldwide, letting anyone check whether an image, video or audio file was created with AI tools from Google and several major industry partners, including OpenAI.
The SynthID Detector website, launched globally in English on Tuesday, scans uploaded media for SynthID, an invisible digital watermark that Google and its partners embed in content generated by their AI models.
The portal had been limited to a small group of testers, including journalists and researchers, for more than a year.
"Today, we're expanding SynthID Detector in partnership with @OpenAI, @NVIDIA, Kakao & soon @Apple as part of an industry-wide effort to make AI-generated content more transparent," Google said in a post on X.
Detecting more than Google's AI
The biggest change is that the tool is no longer limited to Google-made content.
In addition to media created with Google's own AI models, the detector can now identify watermarked content generated by tools from OpenAI, chipmaker Nvidia and South Korean tech company Kakao. Google said support for images created with Apple Intelligence is coming soon.
Until now, verification was fragmented. Google's Gemini chatbot could only detect watermarks made by Google's AI tools, while OpenAI's verification website could only detect SynthID signatures from OpenAI products, according to Android Authority.
The new portal brings those checks........
