As you read this, the movie star Leonardo DiCaprio, 50, is on a yacht somewhere in the Mediterranean with his girlfriend, Vittoria Ceretti, a 27-year-old model. The couple have been pictured in their swimming togs – she in a bikini, he in dark shorts – enjoying their holiday together, a seasonal paparazzo portrait of the rich, famous and fortunate.

DiCaprio has plenty of previous when it comes to dating women much younger than he. So much so that he was the butt of one of Ricky Gervais’s best jokes. As host of the Golden Globes in 2020, Gervais was making fun of a film that was nearly three hours long.

“Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere,” Gervais said, “and by the end his date was too old for him.” In the audience, DiCaprio wore an expression that spoke of pride rather than embarrassment.
