Jennifer Porter couldn’t think straight. The fire was approaching her house, and she needed to get her five cats into the car. In her panic, she almost left two of them in the trunk. The only other thing she took was her purse. A 35-year-old ER nurse, Porter had just worked all night at the hospital in Paradise, California. But trying to drive out of town that morning in November 2018, the sky went dark and traffic was stopped. Everyone was frantic to leave, and crews were blocking streets to get those closest to the blaze out first. Porter was stuck in a line of cars.
