Tom Bilyeu didn’t want to be an entrepreneur. He wanted to be a filmmaker.

Two successful entrepreneurs told him the truth: if you want to control the art, you have to control the resources. So get into business and get rich.

“Boy, does that sound dumb now,” he told me. “I thought it would take eighteen months. It took fifteen years.”

He spent eight years at a security software company first, eventually walking away from about two million dollars in equity because the work wasn’t making him feel alive. He was going to move to Greece with his wife and write screenplays. His partners stopped him. They weren’t happy either. What would it take for the three of them to keep working together?

The answer, over time, became Quest Nutrition, the protein bar company that became one of the fastest-growing companies in America and sold for over a billion dollars.

When I asked what separates a unicorn from a non-unicorn, his answer was uncomfortable.

“There is an element of timing that I am very sad to report is very real,” he said.
