'Andy Burnham Must Take This Chance To Rewire Westminster And Change The Way Brits Vote'

Writing for HuffPost UK, Labour MPs Anna Dixon and Patrick Hurley make the case for proportional representation.

Labour must seize this last chance and be bold.

We are among the over 90 Labour MPs – and over 180 MPs from across parliament – calling on Andy Burnham to lead on electoral reform.

All have signed Alex Sobel’s amendment to the Representation of the People Bill calling for a review of Westminster’s First Past the Post voting system.

The Bill, due to be debated this week, has been postponed at the last minute to September.

Meanwhile, minor party leaders like Ed Davey and Zack Polanski are calling for a change to the system before the next election.

But only Labour has a track record of actually delivering fair parliaments around the UK.

Burnham now has a chance to set out a clear vision for the future of British politics and build consensus by launching a National Commission on Electoral Reform.

In an age of rising disillusionment with democracy, and frustration with a status quo that feels unaccountable and remote, we must not listen to those who pretend that everything is broken and........
