Why we must strive to retain international rules-based systems
Ireland is reeling from President Trump’s choice of Irish representative to visit the White House on St Patrick’s Day: the mixed martial artist Conor McGregor, found by a Dublin jury in civil trial last year to have committed a sexual assault, with a previous criminal assault conviction. During Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s visit the previous week, Mr Trump had declared that Mr McGregor was his favourite Irishman. McGregor used his White House lectern to denounce Ireland as a dangerous place, thanks to immigration.
Dodgy public standards are increasingly normal. Highlighting Mr Trump’s hero’s criminal record reveals you as part of the smug elite that the people are fed up with. Noting that Mr Trump himself shares the distinction of a recent civil finding of sexual assault, and has his own felony record, confirms political bias.
