The inauguration of the Centre of Excellence for Lavender and Aromatic Crops at Sirhama in Anantnag marks a significant milestone in Jammu and Kashmir’s agricultural journey. Established at a cost of ₹371.62 lakh, the project reflects a forward-looking vision that seeks to diversify farming practices, strengthen rural livelihoods and promote sustainable agriculture in the face of changing climatic conditions. More than just an agricultural initiative, the lavender project has the potential to usher in a new era of economic transformation in rural Kashmir.Agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir has traditionally depended on crops such as paddy, maize and horticultural produce. However, changing weather patterns, declining water tables and the increasing impact of global warming have made traditional farming practices more challenging and less profitable in many regions. In this context, lavender cultivation presents itself as a promising alternative. The crop requires comparatively less water, thrives in rain-fed and hilly areas and offers higher returns than many conventional crops.

The newly established Centre of Excellence aims to equip farmers with scientific knowledge, quality planting material and modern cultivation techniques.
