Every visible site is scarred by plastic, sanitary waste, pesticide containers, e-Solid waste crisis is no longer a localized nuisance but a national ecological emergency. Our hamlets are choking on waste; plastic clogged drains, worst flash flood and monsoon flooding; landfills like Achen in Srinagar have become mountains of methane, fire, and leachate; open burning of materials foul the air; and rivers, canals and standing water bodies witness the burden of negligence in terms of lack of scientific disposal of waste. Every visible site is scarred by plastic, sanitary waste, pesticide containers, e-waste and the debris of packaged consumption. There is no solid mechanism in place to deal with the mounting heaps of garbage in and around rural hamlets. It is an eye sore while visualizing the distressing scenes of garbage littered everywhere, along the roadside, in open fields and on the banks of water bodies. There is literally no segregation of wastes at the source level. People in rural hamlets have no idea about what to do with the waste generated on daily basis. What option people actually have to dispose off the waste? People are not even aware about the implementing agency shouldered with the responsibility of rural sanitation and cleanliness. It is the mandate of Rural Development department as per the guidelines........
