Jennifer Hyman is perhaps best known as the cofounder and former CEO of Rent-the-Runway, the company that virtually created the on-demand clothing rental category. Hyman left Rent the Runway earlier this year, at the time saying only that her next step would be to “help women feel and do all of the things that they want to accomplish.”

Yesterday, we provided a firsthand look at what exactly that next step is: Hyman will take the helm of Babylist, the $750 million (revenue) baby registry business that has expanded its business verticals into health and financial services. Hyman joined me for her first video/broadcast segment about the news, and we talked about everything from why she sees it soon becoming a billion-dollar business to the benefits of returning to running a private company.

“I think that you can pursue much longer-term goals as a private company,” Hyman, who became one of just a few female founder-CEOs to take her company public in 2021, said Wednesday. “Logistically, there's an enormous amount of time in any public company that is spent on being public, on preparing your earnings… and spending those resources towards innovation, towards creativity, to me, is a lot more fulfilling than spending them towards the rules of how to be public.”
