As AI development reaches new frontiers, two researchers are sounding the alarm that the technology could wipe out humanity.

Evan Hubinger, a senior researcher who leads Anthropic’s alignment efforts, said on X that he and his colleagues “earnestly believe AI could kill all humans,” and estimated the odds of that occurring at more than 10% in the next decade. Hubinger was responding to another researcher who recently resigned from the company, Jacob Coxon, who warned that both Anthropic and OpenAI were “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.”

The dire warnings sparked calls from lawmakers from both sides of the aisle for more restrictions on the technology, while billionaire Elon Musk amplified claims that the posts were part of a conspiracy or PR stunt.
