2 Critical Deadlines For Student Loans Are Just Days Away

Student loan borrowers are contending with some of the most significant changes to repayment and loan forgiveness in a generation. Navigating these reforms has become even more challenging due to shifting timelines and deadlines, and widespread glitches that are disrupting borrowers’ ability to enroll their student loans in key programs. But while several key deadlines have already passed, two significant milestones are only days away.

On July 1, the Education Department began implementing a series of major changes to federal student loan forgiveness programs and repayment plans. To enact elements of the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act that Congress passed last year, the department launched two new repayment plans (the Tiered Standard repayment plan, and the Repayment Assistance Plan, or RAP), imposed new caps on borrowing, and began cutting off Parent PLUS borrowers from key income-driven repayment plans if they had not already consolidated their student loans. Separately, the department began the process of forcing scores of borrowers out of the SAVE plan following a court-endorsed settlement that has scuttled the program. Millions of borrowers are collectively impacted by these sweeping changes.

Now, two key deadlines imposed by the Education Department are rapidly approaching. Borrowers with federal student loans should take note. Here’s a breakdown.
