The word authenticity has become so ubiquitous in recent years, it could almost be ignored. And yet, authenticity is what makes identity matter. This is as true for cultures and companies as it is for individuals.
That same principle is at the heart of brand design. When people hear “brand design,” they often think of logos, typography, taglines, color palettes, and campaigns. Those elements are important, but only scratch the surface. Great brands are designed through every decision made, interaction fostered, and experience delivered. Organizations create brands authentically from the inside out.
Consumers are inundated with messaging and have unprecedented access to information; authenticity is one of a brand’s most valuable assets. People don’t simply believe what a company says about itself; they evaluate whether its actions reinforce that story. And as the lines between public and private influence blur, investors, partners, and other stakeholders increasingly shape how organizations operate. Brand authenticity is about ensuring identity remains a guidepost for growth.
I’m a strategy professional who has spent my career building brands. For 20 years, I’ve said that authentic brands are intentionally designed through four essential building blocks: storytelling, community, experience, and transparency. The fact that this is still news means it still matters.
