Pakistan hosts successful OIC Ministerial Conference on Women: The 9th conference in Islamabad produced the Islamabad Declaration and a digital inclusion initiative, with Pakistan assuming the chairmanship for the next two years and emphasizing measurable progress over declarations. 

Women’s empowerment as strategic necessity: The conference highlighted that advancing women’s access to education, finance, digital skills, leadership, and protection from violence is essential for economic growth, governance, social cohesion, and sustainable development across OIC member states. 

Pakistan’s two-year test: As chair, Pakistan must focus on practical implementation, benchmarking, reporting, and cooperation to turn commitments into results, particularly in girls’ education, women’s employment, financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and violence prevention.

Debates about women’s empowerment in the Muslim world are often reduced to an artificial contest between Islamic values and modernity. The 9th Ministerial Conference on Women of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), proudly hosted by Pakistan in Islamabad, offered a chance to move beyond that familiar argument.

Representatives from the OIC’s 57 member states gathered under the theme, “Socio-Economic and Political Empowerment of Women in OIC Countries: Challenges and Way Forward.” The central question was not whether women’s advancement is compatible with Islam, but how Muslim countries can turn established religious, constitutional and legal principles into meaningful opportunities for women.

That distinction matters. Women’s empowerment is no longer simply a social or rights issue. It is increasingly a strategic necessity for economic growth, good governance, social progress and sustainable development. Women’s meaningful participation can also strengthen social cohesion and lasting peace by ensuring that a broader range of experiences and priorities informs public decision-making.

This is the real significance of Pakistan assuming the chairmanship of the OIC Ministerial Conference on Women for the next two years. Islamabad now has a platform to move the OIC’s women’s agenda beyond declarations and toward measurable progress in education, employment, finance, technology and leadership. Its credibility will depend on implementation.
