Village Wine Or Branded Wine? Brief Assessment Of Wine Preferences Among Travelers In Turkey – OpEd

In recent years, the growth of gastronomy tourism in Türkiye has increased interest in local markets. Travelers visiting regions such as Thrace and the Aegean often purchase homemade wines sold in village markets. While these products may appear attractive for their authenticity and natural image, they can raise concerns regarding quality and reliability.

Village wines are typically produced on a small scale. In many cases, fermentation is not well controlled, and hygiene, storage, and aging conditions may not meet standard requirements. As a result, these wines are generally considered “young wines,” often with limited aromatic complexity, higher acidity, and a relatively harsh bitter taste. The use of sulfur may also be inconsistent, which can negatively affect flavor.

In Türkiye, most wines are not intended for long-term aging. They are generally best consumed within 4 to 6 years. Wines younger than 3–4 years may still have a firm and slightly astringent character. Wines older than 6 years, especially if not stored under proper conditions, may be at risk of oxidation, spoilage, or mold. For this reason, early consumption is usually a safer choice, particularly for village-produced wines.

By contrast, established producers such as Kavaklıdere, Doluca, and Diren operate according to international standards. They carefully manage all stages of production, from vineyard practices to bottling. This ensures more consistent, reliable, and traceable products for consumers.

The key distinction is between a “romantic experience” and a “quality-assured product.” A wine purchased from a village market may offer a unique local story and experience. However, for regular consumption or when a certain level of quality is expected, branded and regulated wines are generally the more appropriate choice.

Local wines remain valuable as a cultural experience. However, from both a quality and consumer safety perspective, careful selection is recommended. Choosing reliable producers in Türkiye will provide a more consistent and enjoyable wine experience.
