Early Migration Alert Over Büyükada: Do Thousands Of Storks Signal An Early Winter? – OpEd

At around 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, 6 August 2026, one of nature’s most spectacular aerial displays unfolded over the skies of Büyükada. Thousands of migratory birds—predominantly white storks—followed their ancient north-to-south migration route, soaring gracefully above the island and filling the sky with vast circling flocks.

As they have done for generations, the birds selected their traditional resting sites on Büyükada. Large numbers descended into the forests surrounding Hristos Hill, the wooded areas near the Muslim Cemetery, and the groves behind the historic Greek Orphanage. Having completed a long and demanding stage of their journey, these winged visitors will spend the night resting and feeding in the island’s protected woodlands. Tomorrow morning, once the sun has sufficiently warmed the ground, they will take advantage of rising thermal air currents to glide southward with minimal energy, continuing their migration via Yalova.
