Reclaiming The True Meaning Of Peace – OpEd

Before a single word of conversation begins, the first gift a Muslim offers to another person is a profound prayer for their well-being—a sincere wish that peace be upon them. It is not merely a common greeting or a casual “good morning”; it is the intentional invocation of Peace. This remains our primary offering in every encounter, yet somewhere between that initial blessing and the demands of daily life, we often lose what we share so freely. We pronounce peace with our lips before we speak another word, yet we spend our lives pursuing it, perhaps never pausing to ask why the disconnect exists.

The concept of “Salam” encompasses much more than a simple word; it represents a state of safety, soundness, and wholeness. It is a condition in which your internal self is no longer at war with your environment. This true peace is achieved when your mind stops resisting your current circumstances and your heart ceases its struggle with the past. It is found when your daily actions align harmoniously with your deepest beliefs. This is peace in its most authentic form. The fact that we offer this prayer to everyone, from strangers and new acquaintances to our closest family suggests an innate, deep-seated understanding that this is what humanity needs most. We identify this necessity in others before a conversation even begins, yet we frequently neglect to nurture that same peace within our own souls.
