Hidden underground space in the Lanes to be unlocked

A hidden space beneath Upper St Giles Street is to be unlocked in a new experience called 'the Old Rifle Range and Underground Norwich Tour'.

Launched by the Shoebox Experiences, a non-profit organisation in the city, visitors will learn about the myths of what lies beneath the streets of Norwich.

And Lisa Willett, customer experience manager for the Shoebox Experiences, has revealed more about the secret location.

She said: "The space is privately owned and we are taking out a short-term lease to run the tour.

"It has never been opened to the general public before.

"We believe it was built in the 1700s and was a wine cellar from 1783 onwards.

"Robert and Thomas Suffield were wine merchants at the site.

"It then became home to Eaton Rifle Club in the 20th century.

"Beneath Earlham Road, which is near Upper St Giles Street, there are lots of chalk mines.

"In 1988 a bus sank because a chalk mine collapsed and we discuss this on the tour."

Ms Willett added that Eaton Rifle Club has since disbanded and she has been trying to track down former members.

Tickets went on sale to email subscribers on February 23 and bookings opened the following day for the general public.

Ms Willett said: "There are still some general sale tickets available until the end of June.

"We will be releasing more, but if people want to get a first look, I would recommend booking as soon as possible.

"The tour launches in April and it will run between three and five times per week.

"It's really exciting."

Tickets cost £20pp for adults and £8.50pp for children.

Norwich’s Hidden Street Tour, also run by the Shoebox Experiences, takes visitors down into a preserved medieval street under Castle Meadow.
