Farmland bird count highlights need to provide winter food for vulnerable species
That is one of the key findings from the 2026 Big Farmland Bird Count (BFBC), a nationwide survey led by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT).
The count highlights the critical role that supplementary feeding and habitat management play in supporting farmland birds during the winter months.
A total of 275,024 birds were counted during two weeks in February, across 292,828 hectares of the UK's farmland, with the highest number of submissions coming from Suffolk (139), Norfolk (101), and Lincolnshire (62).
