IN numerous states, including many of Pakistan’s neighbours, rail transport is a safe and affordable mode of travel. But in this country, rail journeys can be perilous, as the derailment of the Peshawar-bound Rehman Baba Express near Multan early on Tuesday shows. In fact, derailments and accidents are far too common on our rail network, because for decades, the railways have remained underfunded. At least five people died in the tragedy, which is being blamed on “mechanical failure”.........
