Happy birthday, Steve Wozniak.

Steve who? You say.

Steve Wozniak was the founder of Apple of whom you will rarely have heard. His partner in creation was Steve Jobs, of whom you will have heard a lot.

It was a partnership of two very bright enthusiasts in that golden age of invention when the tech dawn was just breaking.

The pair built their first machines in Jobs' family garage in 1976. Wozniak was the software genius and Jobs, with his lean California figure and black T-shirt (or was it a polo neck?) was the genius of marketing.

Jobs turned Apple into the behemoth it now is. He transformed our lives with the iPhone and computers small enough for a handbag and then a pocket.

But Woz left in 1986 to become a teacher - and a happy man.

He has just turned 75, and his birthday reminded me of the better side of American capitalism, which - forgive me for burping in church - now smells rotten.
