Stop the West Coast pipeline. Not even the oil companies are asking for it

Canadian Dimension is publishing the following statement from Seniors for Climate Action Now! (SCAN!), which urges the Carney government to reject the proposed West Coast oil pipeline ahead of the October 1 decision deadline.

Dear Prime Minister Carney,

On July 2, flying from Ottawa to Calgary to announce the new West Coast oil pipeline, storms grounded you. You called the weather “biblical.” Perhaps that was Mother Earth asking you to think twice. By October 1, your government must decide whether to fast-track that pipeline as a project of national interest.

The climate breakdown occurring around the world is not a biblical event. By scientific consensus, it is human-caused—driven primarily by fossil fuels, responsible for more than 75 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

So far this year, 4,800 wildfires have burned across Canada. Last month tens of thousands fled BC’s Okanagan; earlier, more than 2,800 people from northwestern Ontario First Nations were displaced—part of a national pattern of disproportionate First Nations evacuations. You thanked the firefighters and said you were keeping evacuees in your thoughts. These communities were not displaced by an act of God. They were displaced by a warming world—one this pipeline, and the fossil fuel expansion you are committing........
