Bell: Calgary's Fightin' Dan McLean ready to butt heads with Nenshi as an MLA

Dan McLean is the no-nonsense south Calgary member of city council.

Now he wants to be the no-nonsense south Calgary member of the legislature, itching to join the fight against Naheed Nenshi and the NDP in the Battle for Alberta next election.

McLean will tell Calgarians Friday he is putting his name forward to run under the UCP banner in the riding of Calgary-Shaw, strong conservative country in the city’s deep south.

If McLean is chosen he would replace Rebecca Schulz, the former high-profile member of Premier Danielle Smith’s inner circle, who is expected to exit from provincial politics later this month.

The man says when he was on city council he learned how to fight. He learned how to fight for what he calls common sense values.

He was in the minority, getting the short end of the stick when the city council majority under former mayor Jyoti Gondek pushed through what they wanted and didn’t take kindly to opposition.

The majority acted an awful lot like the council majority under the mayor before Gondek, Naheed Nenshi, 11 years in the city’s top job and now the Alberta NDP leader.
