Bell: Albertans speak out, Smith government bike lane crackdown now a go

Premier Danielle Smith’s point man on pavement is more sure than ever that the province is on the right track.

Last month, the Smith government put on their website a place where Albertans could have a say on bike lanes.

In less than a month they’ve had over 13,000 people give their opinion, identifying problem bike lanes and even offering up photos of empty bike lanes.

These are those little-used bike lanes where people in Calgary and Edmonton were told there would be all kinds of cyclists hitting the cycle tracks and it never happened.

Getting a snapshot of a near-empty bike lane in the city even on a warm day in August is easy peasy and if the weather is even a tiny bit off it’s worse.

The Alberta politicians go back to Edmonton in late October.

Once they’re back the Alberta government plans to bring in a law on bike lanes.

If cities want to bring in a new bike lane, cities have to show evidence they are needed and will not have any negative impacts on the community.
