Argentina-US trade deal can unlock opportunities, but Congress must approve it
Bilateral relations between Argentina and the United States are at an unprecedented point in their history, driven by close geopolitical alignment between Javier Milei’s government and Donald Trump’s administration. That alignment could deepen on the trade front through the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade and Investment (ARTI), signed by the two countries earlier this year. The agreement could open up new business opportunities for American companies looking to invest in Argentina, as well as for Argentine firms seeking to expand into the U.S. market. One way capitalize these opportunities is through friendshoring—the practice of shifting or developing key parts of a country’s supply chains in countries that are its geopolitical allies. This approach has gained particular prominence since Donald Trump’s second term began and his administration escalated its tariff war with China. For this to become a reality, however, one crucial step remains: approval by the Argentine Congress, the final hurdle before the agreement can take effect. That was the main conclusion drawn by several speakers at the AmCham’s (the American Chamber of Commerce) Trade & Conference on Wednesday, which the Herald attended at the Santander Auditorium.
