Airport security firms linked to alleged Mexican arms trafficking network

As Mexico welcomes millions of international visitors during the FIFA World Cup, new investigative reporting has raised questions about the background of companies responsible for security operations at the country’s busiest airport. The allegations center on two private security firms that were awarded contracts to provide services at Mexico City International Airport (AICM), despite historical corporate records linking them to individuals later accused by federal prosecutors of involvement in organized crime and firearms trafficking.

According to an investigation by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and its Mexican media partner, Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI), two companies-SERPROSEP SA de CV and Armour King SA de CV-received three-year airport security contracts in 2025. The findings have prompted renewed scrutiny of procurement oversight and corporate transparency in Mexico, particularly as the country hosts one of the world’s largest sporting events.

Mexico City International Airport is experiencing one of the busiest periods in its history as football supporters from around the world arrive for World Cup matches. Authorities estimate that approximately 5.5 million additional passengers will pass through the airport during the tournament, placing extraordinary demands on aviation security and passenger screening systems.

Against this backdrop, revelations regarding the corporate history of two airport security contractors have drawn considerable public attention. While there is no evidence that airport security operations themselves have been compromised, investigators argue that the ownership history of the companies raises legitimate questions about due diligence during the government contracting process.

The investigation focuses on historical corporate registration documents for SERPROSEP SA de CV. A company registry dated 2022 lists Jorge Enrique Alberts Ponce and Alfonso Sainz de la Maza Zúñiga as co-owners of the security company.

Federal authorities later issued an arrest warrant for Alberts in November 2025. Prosecutors accuse him of participating in organized criminal activities involving both hydrocarbon theft and the trafficking of firearms.
