The great Brexit debate - five years on are we better for leaving?

It's been nearly five years since the UK said goodbye to the European Union, and within these nine years, the world has suffered a pandemic, conflicts, and financial turmoil. Our readers have been reflecting on whether Brexit has lived up to their expectations.

The referendum, originally deployed by former Prime Minister David Cameron to silence the "eurosceptics" in his Tory party, backfired spectacularly on him. The result was cemented in the contentious 52-48% split after a debate rife with contention on finance, immigration, and national identity.

The aftermath dragged on as officials squabbled over Brexit terms, timings, and musings about a possible EU comeback. Finally, the countdown concluded, and Britain's chapter in the EU history books was closed.
