Sunderland 1-1 Aston Villa highlights, ratings and reaction after draw at the Stadium of Light

Aston Villa go in search of their first win of the season this afternoon as Unai Emery’s side take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Villa sit second-bottom in the Premier League, having picked up just two points from their first four matches, and are yet to score a league goal.

Harvey Elliott did break their goalscoring drought on Tuesday night, but after a 1-1 draw against Brentford in the Carabao Cup, Villa were knocked out on penalties.

Sunderland, meanwhile, have made a strong start - winning both of their opening home league games against West Ham and Brentford - before drawing 0-0 at Crystal Palace last weekend.

However, the Black Cats have won just one of their last 12 league meetings with Villa and are aiming to win three consecutive home Premier League matches for the first time since February 2012.

If Villa fail to find the net today, they will become only the third team in top-flight history to go goalless in their first five league games of a season - after Ipswich Town (1970–71) and Crystal Palace (2017–18).

Stay tuned for build-up, team news, live coverage, and post-match reaction from our Villa correspondent,
