An onslaught of geopolitical events directly impacting world economies is causing institutional investors to adapt to the unexpected every day, just the way Carrie Freeborough likes it.

“Markets are dynamic, markets change every day and there’s no crystal ball,” says the Alberta Investment Management Corp.’s managing director and head of centralized trading for public markets. “That’s exciting to me. It gets me up in the morning and it’s what I really like about the job.”

After experiencing several world-changing events, such as the 2000 dot-com bubble, the global financial crisis of 2008/09 and the coronavirus pandemic, she knows opportunities can be uncovered amid an uncertain landscape. “Experience helps to embrace the dynamics of the market and the volatility but [it’s important to] come at it with a calm and cool head. . . . It can get overwhelming and it can get panicky.”
