OPINION: CUPE’s statement on Iran reveals a distorted obsession

While warning against “foreign interference,” in Iran, CUPE appears to echo the worldview advanced by the Islamic Republic itself.

On Jan. 30, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) released a statement on the situation in Iran. It claimed to stand in solidarity with the “people of Iran,” deploring repression and calling for justice and democracy. Yet, in a pattern that has become painfully familiar since October 7, 2023, CUPE managed to turn even the brutal murder of Iranians by their regime into a stage for its obsession with Israel.

The current round of riots has roiled Iran since late December 2025. What began as economic protests quickly erupted into open revolt against the Islamic Regime. Under the cover of internet blackouts and censorship, an unknown number of Iranians have been massacred by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its Basij paramilitaries. The brutality does not surprise anyone familiar with the longstanding ideology of the Islamic Republic and its machinery of repression.
