Dhaka/New Delhi: Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India this month remains on the table despite Dhaka saying the talks had been “vitiated” by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s press conference in Delhi, with Indian high commissioner Dinesh Trivedi saying on Tuesday (August 18) that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him that Rahman would receive an “honourable reception” in India.

Trivedi said Modi gave him that assurance when the two met in New Delhi on August 11, a day after the high commissioner had met Rahman in Dhaka, where Bangladesh again raised the demand for progress on Hasina’s extradition. “He just mentioned one thing. We need to meet,” Trivedi quoted Modi as telling him.

Speaking at a reception hosted by the Indian high commission for Bangladeshi business leaders and a visiting delegation of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Trivedi said Modi had asked him to convey to Rahman that when he visits India, “he will have such an honourable reception as he deserves, as any such prime minister would deserve”.
