Venezuela to withdraw from International Criminal Court

Venezuela will withdraw from the International Criminal Court over the tribunal’s perceived bias, the nation’s foreign minister says.

The announcement comes amid an ongoing ICC investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed under ousted Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro’s government.

Caracas informed the United Nations of its “firm and irrevocable decision” to withdraw from the ICC, Foreign Minister Felix Plasencia writes on X.

Interim leader Delcy Rodriguez, who took over after US forces ousted Maduro in January, instructed the move, he adds.

“Venezuela considers that the Court’s actions reflect a demonstrated geographical bias, which has disproportionately concentrated its work on African and Latin American countries,” Plasencia says.

The United States welcomes the removal of International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan over misconduct allegations, branding him as an example of institutional corruption.

“It is good that he is gone, but he is only one small cog in this irredeemably corrupt institution. Today’s outcome will have no impact on the United States’ plans to dismantle the ICC,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott says on X.
