Two Faces of the World: Gaza Over Afghanistan
The world has shown a striking double standard, mourning distant tragedies while ignoring the horrors faced by Israel. While Israel endured one of the most brutal massacres since the Holocaust on October 7th, celebrated by the overwhelming majority of Gaza’s population, the global media narrative quickly turned against Israel. The attacks initiated a war that has lasted two long years. Today, Israel is constantly scrutinized and demonized, while Gazans, who actively supported the abduction, murder, torture, and rape of women, men, children, babies, teenagers, the elderly, Holocaust survivors, soldiers, and civilians, are portrayed as the victims.
The atrocities committed by Hamas with the backing of nearly the entire Gaza population are largely ignored. Instead, Israel faces relentless criticism, aided by an extremely effective propaganda machine. Artificial intelligence and social media amplify false narratives, portraying Gaza as innocent and Israel as the aggressor. While Gazans are depicted suffering in tents during cold weather, just twenty kilometers away, Israelis in Ashkelon are sunbathing on the beach, highlighting the manipulation at play. Israel has struggled to win the media war, and its story is often lost amid widespread misinformation.
The two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas has shifted into a fragile ceasefire phase. While full-scale warfare has paused, terrorist attacks and violence by Hamas, continue in Gaza. and along the border. Israeli forces carry out operations citing security concerns, and Hamas regularly disrupts the ceasefire. Civilians remain under a constant threat, and peace is far from stable.
All Israeli hostages taken on October 7, 2023, have now been returned, either alive or deceased, marking a significant milestone in Israeli society. Security remains paramount. The Israel Defense Forces maintain a high state of readiness along the Gaza border and in strategic areas to prevent renewed attacks. Tensions persist along the northern border with Lebanon due to Hezbollah and Iranian-aligned groups.
Domestically, Israel focuses on recovery and reconstruction. Communities damaged or displaced by rocket attacks are rebuilding, yet trauma and insecurity persist. Politics and society are deeply shaped by these security concerns, and debates over long-term peace and protection continue.
Meanwhile, the world largely ignores the real human catastrophe unfolding in Afghanistan. Following the U.S. withdrawal in 2021, the Taliban rapidly seized power, reinstating a brutal regime that severely restricts women and girls, bans education and work for them, enforces harsh punishments, and commits systematic repression. The humanitarian crisis is catastrophic, with over twenty-three million Afghans in need of aid, ongoing violence from ISIS K, and no international recognition of the Taliban. Yet global outrage is muted, largely because this suffering does not involve Jews.
Israel faces constant threats, has defended its citizens against unimaginable attacks, and continues to protect democracy, human rights, and security in the region. The world must recognize Israel not as the oppressor, but as a nation under siege, striving to defend its people against forces that celebrate mass murder and terror.
