A Free Chinese AI Just Beat America’s Best

As of this week, the best AI in the world at building a website does not come from San Francisco. It comes from Beijing, it took first place from the strongest model America sells, and before the month is out, anyone on Earth will be able to download it for free.

The model is called Kimi K3, released on July 16 by a Chinese lab named Moonshot AI, timed days before China’s flagship AI conference in Shanghai. Within a day it climbed to the top of the Frontend Code Arena, a widely watched leaderboard run by Arena.ai in which people compare two AI-built web pages side by side, without knowing which model made which, and vote for the better one. K3 debuted at No. 1 with 1,679 points, nudging Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 (1,631) into second place and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 (1,618) into third. Moonshot’s previous model had ranked 18th on the same board. The new one leads six of the seven categories the arena tracks.
