Nuclear energy could power India’s future

Growing populations, expanding industries, and rapidly increasing technological demands require reliable and affordable energy sources. At the same time, concerns about pollution and climate change are compelling governments to reconsider their dependence on conventional fossil fuels. As countries search for sustainable responses to rising energy demands and technological challenges, nuclear energy can play an important role in improving the quality of life.

It can generate electricity with very low greenhouse-gas emissions, making nuclear power an important component of a diversified low-carbon and reliable energy system. Beyond electricity generation, nuclear technology contributes to healthcare through cancer diagnosis and treatment, supports agricultural productivity and food preservation, assists industries through advanced testing and quality-control techniques, and enables scientific research, environmental monitoring, and even deep-space exploration. There is no doubt that nuclear technology possesses immense power ; however, when used irresponsibly, this power can have enormous destructive consequences.

The misuse of nuclear technology can result in devastating human and environmental impacts. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 caused the immediate deaths of more than 200000 people and exposed countless survivors to high levels of ionizing radiation, with long-term consequences including increased risks of cancer and other health complications. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster in 1986 in Ukraine and the Goiânia accident in 1987 in Brazil released radioactive material into the environment and caused severe and long-lasting ecological and public-health consequences.

These events demonstrated the potentially serious consequences of failures in nuclear safety, security, and responsible handling of radioactive materials. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011, triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami, reinforced the importance of stringent safety standards, robust emergency preparedness, and effective regulatory oversight in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
