Trump’s Gaza Plan: A New Balfour Declaration in the 21st Century
When Donald Trump unveiled his 20-point plan to end Israel’s war on Gaza, it was presented as a roadmap to peace. Yet, beneath its promises of reconstruction and ceasefire, the plan mirrors an older betrayal — the infamous Balfour Declaration of 1917. Just as Britain once pledged away Palestine without consulting its people, Trump’s plan once again sacrifices Palestinian rights on the altar of Israeli security.
From Balfour to Trump: Echoes of History
The Balfour Declaration, issued by Britain’s Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour in a letter to Lord Rothschild, promised “a national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine. At the time, 90 percent of the population were Palestinian Muslims and Christians. Their very existence was reduced to a footnote — “non-Jewish communities.” Britain, which did not own Palestine, gave away what was not theirs, laying the foundation for dispossession, colonization, and the Nakba of 1948.
Trump’s Gaza plan follows the same script. Like Balfour, it was drafted without Palestinian consent. It demands Palestinians disarm, surrender........
