The PAC-3 missile—normally the backbone of the land-based Patriot anti-air defense system—could soon be integrated onto US Navy ships to help them intercept aerial threats.
The US Navy is looking to upgrade its air defense capabilities by stocking up on one of the most effective interceptors on the market.
Lockheed Martin announced earlier in the week that it had secured a $93 million contract with the US Navy for the integration of the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) interceptor, primarily designed for the MIM-104 Patriot land-based air defense system, to the AEGIS ship-based combat system.
Why Does the Navy Want the PAC-3 MSE Interceptor?
The Navy is moving forward with integrating one of the most advanced air defense weapons in the world. The contract is the final step before the official adoption of the PAC-3 MSE. The Pentagon has already earmarked 405 PAC-3 MSE munitions for the Navy in next year’s defense budget.
