Re-Saffronisation of India
There are ongoing discussions about the growing influence of Hindu nationalist discourse in Indian politics. While much of this is visible at the national level, it is increasingly manifesting itself at the state and municipal levels, where everyday decisions are made. This shift reflects the growing prominence of Hindu nationalist symbols and priorities within India’s political system, often overshadowing the original ideals of fairness and equal respect for all.
This movement towards a specific ideology—driven by developments such as new citizenship laws—redefines who belongs and on what terms. These national-level changes then filter down, affecting how states and municipalities function, how they campaign, and what dominates public discourse. State governments are increasingly becoming spaces where this ideology is tested and normalised. Changes in school textbooks, the renaming of places, or a greater emphasis on religious symbols in public events all contribute to this process. Even when such changes appear minor, collectively they reinforce the dominance of one culture over others.
