The series of innocent people falling into open manholes in various cities of Pakistan could not be halted. Despite the deaths of several individuals, neither the administration nor the provincial government took action to curb the suffering of the public. Another incident of this nature has now come to light, in which a mother and daughter fell into a manhole. After Karachi, the heartbreaking incident of a mother and daughter slipping into an open manhole in Lahore is not simply an accident but an unambiguous instance of administrative negligence in construction work. A tragic aspect of this incident was the administration’s initial criminal negligence in denying its authenticity and declaring it fake news, due to which the rescue operation was delayed and no help could be given to the mother and child. The company working on the expansion project is being held responsible for the negligence by the Punjab government for not taking adequate safety measures at the construction site. However, this is not the first incident of its kind and probably will not be the last.
