The power of impeachment

Only a naive person would think impeachment is immune from politics. Politics is much of why any such impressive and sobering action occurs. There are objective reasons for impeachment, but their reality intertwines with the reality of partisan politics. That makes the responsibility for those who would or would not vote for impeachment difficult. Of course, as with all things political, considering impeachment is a matter of justice and fairness. Justice may be impartial, but earthly justice happens across more than one set of eyes.

If we look at the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, it is a bitter and controversial matter. Some favor letting Yoon’s overnight declaration of martial law go. Perhaps that concerns perceptions of the opposition party’s interactions with North Korea or elements favorable to North Korea. I am not commenting on the truth claims of any side in this matter. What certainly has reached international notice is that just as many or more South Korean citizens think Yoon should be convicted and removed from office because of his actions. It is the division that reaches international attention.
