THIS column could save your life. It’s not often I’m able to make that boast.

I’m tempted to say that the subject is a delicate one, so if you’re of a squeamish disposition, look away now. But please don’t.

There’s nothing delicate about matters of life and death, and certainly nothing to be squeamish about.

Those of you who keep up with the news will know what I’m talking about if I mention the names Dermot Murnaghan and Chris Hoy.

My subject is a small gland, it’s about the size of a walnut, sitting just below the bladder. The prostate, for that’s its name, is part of the male reproductive system.

I knew Dermot at the beginning of his career, and his death last week, aged just 68, from prostate cancer was not unexpected but it still came as a shock.

It was a salutary reminder of the importance of keeping prostate health in the public eye. Hence this column.

Along with Chris Hoy, the Olympic cyclist, who has also been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer, Dermot turned his affliction into an opportunity to broadcast how important it is for men to focus on prostate health. Please, heed the call.
